Physicians from University of Miami/Jackson’s Miami Transplant Institute have high hopes that Darius Redd, the Clewiston High School student athlete who contracted viral cardiomyopathy and now needs a heart and kindey transplant, will soon benefit from donor organs. Redd spent six months in the hospital but was well enough to go home for the holidays.

Miller, M.D., professor of pediatrics and director of the Division of Pediatric Clinical Research, published two major multicenter studies this month that found HIV-positive children exposed to antiretroviral drugs in utero or at birth are at higher risk for developing premature cardiovascular disease.

The second annual Dolphins Cycling Challenge fulfilled its mission of doubling the first year’s fundraising goal. At Sunday’s Dolphins game, the Miami Dolphins Foundation presented a check for $1,070,000 from the Dolphins Cycling Challenge to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. The amount is one of the largest gifts ever to Sylvester from a single event.

When Lisa Metsch, a newly minted Ph.D. in sociology, joined the Miller School faculty in 1994 to evaluate HIV prevention strategies for drug users, she noticed something both troubling and transformative: The study groups assembled to test HIV interventions included people at risk for what was then a fatal disease as well as people already living with the virus.

Back in 1986, Homestead resident Mark Frye discovered quite by accident that he had, at best, a year to live, so he thrust himself into the role of medical pioneer. Just 26 at the time, his heart was so enlarged he needed a new one, and he chose an untested but well-prepared team at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital to perform South Florida’s first heart transplant.

Michael Gittelman, hospital administrator of Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, was named CEO of the Year at the South Florida Business Journal’s annual Excellence in Health Care Awards, presented October 6 at the Westin Fort Lauderdale. Additionally, the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine was named Employer of the Year. The Excellence in Health Care Awards honor health care businesses in the South Florida community that impact patient care, medical research, innovation, outreach, and service to the poor and uninsured.

Jagajan “JJ” Karmacharya, M.D., associate professor of clinical surgery, chief of vascular surgery at the Miami VA hospital and associate program director of the vascular surgery fellowship, died Sunday in a plane crash in his homeland of Nepal, where he had gone to visit his ailing mother. Also killed were Dr. Karmacharya’s girlfriend, one of his brothers, a sister-in-law, and 15 other passengers and crew on board.

Offering hope to lymphoma patients who have exhausted their treatment options, the Food and Drug Administration just approved a new drug which was based on an antibody developed at the Miller School of Medicine and has proven effective in recent clinical trials against Hodgkin’s lymphoma (HL) and anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) in patients for whom standard therapies failed.

Stem cell researchers at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine have made another discovery advancing the field of cardiac stem cells. Nanette H. Bishopric, M.D., professor of medicine and director of the Cardiovascular Genetics Laboratory, has led a team of researchers in discovering a factor that can serve as a predictor of stem cell development into blood vessels, a key finding for future applications.

Soy supplements do not help women in menopause, according to the findings of a two-year, $3 million study conducted at the Miller School’s Osteoporosis Center. The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health to determine if the widely popular product could preserve bone health and ease symptoms in the first years of menopause.

Nephrologists at the Miller School have solved a decades-long search for the cause of a significant form of chronic kidney disease – focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). Working with mouse models and a bank of patient samples, scientists have discovered the first circulating factor known to start the process leading to FSGS.

The findings from one of the largest sickle cell anemia studies of its kind could change the standard of care for very young children with the disease. Researchers from the Miller School, and 13 medical centers across the United States, conducted a randomized double-blinded trial to test the impact of hydroxyurea therapy for children between the ages of nine to eighteen months.
